Our new Womens Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes have started at Team M.A.D, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a relatively new sport and self-defence system in comparison to other Martial Arts. So, we wanted to share some of the great benefits Womens BJJ offers!
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a Martial Art that focuses on Grappling, covering grappling standing (throws, trips, etc) and also on the ground (joint locks, chokes, etc). All it sounds a bit intense when you read the last sentence and can appear overwhelming when watching a general class. The good news…is that it’s a great sport and self-defence system which Women learn quickly and excel in! BJJ is focused on using skill and leverage to overcome size and strength, this is perfect for learning self-defence and Women embrace the technical aspect of BJJ, picking it up quick!
6 benefits to joining a Women’s BJJ class:
1. Community and Motivation-
When you go into a Martial Arts Gym that is professional and has experienced instructors, the vibe is always a little different. You know that you will be getting great training and the other students in the class will be upbeat, fun and motivating. They are all there to learn more self-defence and get better each week through their BJJ training. You will make some great like-minded friends who are focused on their health and well being. This really helps the motivation and will keep every class enjoyable and productive.
2. Self Defence-
One of the most important reasons for learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the effectiveness of its self-defence uses. Along with learning Kickboxing and Boxing in our Women’s program, you will learn how to deal with close situations, something which no other Martial Arts does more effectively than BJJ. If someone grabs you from behind, tries to drag you, puts their hands on you in close proximity, among other threatening situations. Rest assured, you will have an answer! BJJ is common practice now for Militaries, Police and other law enforcement around the world, surpassing other Martial Arts. This is for very good reason!
Jiu Jitsu is one of those activities which is always evolving and providing something new to learn. If you are a goal orientated person, you will love BJJ. You have great benchmarks in your training through the use of belt promotions and ‘stripes’. Its a long journey to reach a Black belt, however, time flies when you are having fun!
You will become far more flexible, if you are already flexible, then you are about to put that to great use! Jiu Jitsu will see your body doing movements that may be unfamiliar which will provide a greater amount of flexibility. BJJ is not similar to Yoga, at times though, you might spot a few similarities in the need for ‘bendy-ness’ and flexibility. 5. Health and Fun- You will now have a regular activity that will be a lot of fun and you will feel motivated to attend. We all know some of the struggles in heading to the gym to jump on a treadmill and do some weights. The mix of motivation and physical activity can do amazing things for all areas of your life! This isn’t just for BJJ, it’s for all Martial Arts and sports.
As mentioned sometimes Jiu Jitsu can appear intense and even intimidating. Once you walk into a gym, meet the coach and teammates, you will definitely feel much better! Then after your first class, you will now have some cool new moves up your sleeve that you will want to progress on in the next class and test them out in the next class. This is all part of the Fun! Every class will provide you with these fun moments and experiences on the mats, maybe it’s laughing with your new teammates, or you finally pulled the move off in class. This fun can be addictive!
We could go on listing the benefits for pages, luckily, we won’t! The next step would be to find a BJJ class near you to experience a class and see the benefits for yourself.
