How long does it take to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

For some amazing and dedicated practitioners, black belts can be achieved in under 4 years.  For those who practice BJJ only casually, it may take much longer to become proficient.

Some BJJ practitioners have trained for years but never achieve the rank of the black belt because they can not commit enough time or have other obligations and that’s okay! If you are learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for fitness, self defence skills, stress relief, etc., the belts become just a bonus!

How hard is it to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

It is not hard to learn BJJ, but there can be challenges.

There are specific BJJ techniques that require strength, speed and agility, this can be tricky for different body types.

The style of coaching in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches you discipline by requiring focus on mastering one technique at a time until it becomes second nature before moving onto the next level of difficulty. Some bjj practitioners do find this style of training frustrating, as it can be slow but it is essential!

Overall, you shouldn’t find it completely difficult to learn BJJ with the assistance of great coaches. , BJJ has been around for decades and the techniques have evolved so much.

Some of the challenges or difficulties with BJJ may include finding a good school, mastering new moves at your own pace rather than being pushed to go quicker than necessary and BJJ can be hard on somebody types due to its intensity.

Can you learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at home?

Yes, BJJ is a martial art that can be learned at home but it is not recommended as you will eventually require an instructor to teach you the techniques, moves, guidance, and safety. There are some BJJ moves that can be observed from instructional videos on youtube or other online sources which may help someone get the idea of BJJ training before they begin lessons at an academy.

A good BJJ academy will also allow you to access great training partners which will help you excel in your training.

Is Jiu-Jitsu good for beginners?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is great for beginners. The bjj technique has many different moves which can be used to defend from a variety of attacks and when you’re starting out, it’s one of the most effective Martial Arts to learn as you see the impact immediately!

  • Don’t expect to get straight into the hard training against partners. Dont be discouraged! There are many gyms do not allow first-time participants to enter ‘free-roll’, this is for your safety and learning progress as you might not know what to do and it’s always better to start your first ‘live’ session with some basic skills to try and practice.
  • Ask your academy what you should expect and if there is anything important to know. This will be really helpful ahead of your first lesson and the Instructor will be very thankful!
